What is ESTA?
ESTA means Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It is an automated online system used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to determine whether eligible Visa Waiver Program travelers can travel to the United States without a visa.
ESTA is required before boarding a U.S.-bound air or sea carrier under the Visa Waiver Program.
ESTA is not a visa, does not guarantee admission and does not change your immigration status. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer makes the final decision when you arrive.
Who needs ESTA?
Citizens or nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries generally need ESTA when traveling to the United States for tourism, business or transit without a visa.
The Visa Waiver Program is available only to travelers who meet all program requirements, including nationality, passport, travel purpose and length-of-stay rules.
If you are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, or if your ESTA is denied, you may need to apply for a U.S. visa.
Who cannot use ESTA?
Some travelers cannot use the Visa Waiver Program even if they hold a passport from a participating country. This can include travelers with certain travel history, dual nationality or other restrictions under U.S. rules.
For example, U.S. Department of State guidance says that some nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries who have traveled to or been present in certain countries, including Cuba on or after January 12, 2021, may need a visa instead of using the Visa Waiver Program.
If your situation is complex, check official U.S. government guidance before booking travel.
When should you apply for ESTA?
You should apply for ESTA before booking non-refundable travel when possible, and always before boarding a U.S.-bound air or sea carrier.
Do not wait until the last minute. Some applications are approved quickly, but others can require additional processing or result in a denial.
If you already have an ESTA, check its status before making travel plans or before departure.
Information required to complete ESTA
To apply for ESTA, prepare a valid passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, a traveler selfie photo, a valid email address, home address, phone number, emergency contact information and a payment method.
The official ESTA website may also request travel information, U.S. contact details, employment information or other eligibility details depending on your situation.
Use the same details as your passport and travel booking to reduce the risk of mistakes.
ESTA application fee
The official ESTA application website currently lists the application fee as 40.27 USD.
Unofficial websites may charge more for unnecessary assistance. Always verify that you are using the official U.S. government ESTA website before entering passport details or payment information.
Step-by-step ESTA application process
First, go to the official ESTA application website operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Then complete the online application with your passport, personal, travel, contact and eligibility information. Review every field before payment and submission, especially passport number, issuing country, date of birth and email address.
After submission, save your application number and check your ESTA status. Keep a copy of the confirmation for your records.
Can you update or correct an ESTA application?
Some ESTA information can be updated after approval, such as your email address or U.S. address, depending on the official system options.
However, mistakes in key passport or identity details may require a new application. Check the official ESTA FAQ before submitting a new application or making travel plans.
ESTA validity and multiple trips
An approved ESTA is generally valid for multiple trips during its validity period, unless it expires, is revoked, or your passport expires first.
You must apply for a new ESTA if you receive a new passport, change your name, change gender, change citizenship, or if your eligibility answers change.
Even with a valid ESTA, each stay under the Visa Waiver Program must respect the allowed purpose and time limits.
ESTA for transit through the United States
Visa Waiver Program travelers transiting through the United States generally need ESTA if they travel without a visa.
Transit still counts as travel to the United States for authorization purposes, so check your ESTA status before boarding.
ESTA official website and scam warnings
The official ESTA website is operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. You should use it when submitting passport, personal, travel and payment information.
Be careful with unofficial websites that request higher fees, imitate government pages or claim that paid assistance is required. ESTA applications can be submitted directly through the official website.
ESTA and United States visa rules
ESTA is linked to the Visa Waiver Program. It is not a visa and it does not replace a visa when a visa is required.
If you want to stay longer than 90 days, work, study for credit, immigrate, or travel for a purpose not allowed under the Visa Waiver Program, you need to check the correct visa category.
